What You’ll Need to Get your Oregon DMV Driver License

You'll need the following documents to get your Oregon driver's license:

  • Application for Driving Privileges or ID Card (Form 735-173).
  • Proof of your legal name
  • Proof of your U.S. legal presence
  • Your Social Security Number
  • Proof of Oregon address
  • Payment for the required fees.
    • $60 for Driver’s license
    • $23 for instruction permit
    • $5 for knowledge test
    • $9 for road test.

 

Oregon DMV Driver License: What You’ll Do

Provisional Instruction Permit Under 18 years old

  • Step 1. Study the Oregon Driver Manual.
  • Step 2. Fill out the application for Driving Privileges or ID card with parent’s signature.
  • Step 3. Take it to a local DMV office.
  • Step 4. Submit all the requirements needed.
  • Step 5. Pass the vision test and knowledge test.
  • Step 6. Pay the $23.00 fee.
  • Step 7. Have your photo taken.
  • Step 8. Wait for  your instruction permit  in the mail.

 

Driver’s license - Over 18 years old

  • Step 1. Study the Oregon Driver Manual.
  • Step 2. Fill out the application for Driving Privileges or ID card with parent’s signature.
  • Step 3. Take it to a local DMV office.
  • Step 4. Submit all the requirements needed.
  • Step 5. Pass the vision test and knowledge test.
  • Step 6. Call to schedule a drive test.
  • Step 7. Pass the driving test.
  • Step 8. Pay the applicable fees for $60.00
  • Step 9. Have your photo taken.
  • Step 10. Wait for  your license in the mail.

Caveats and Exceptions to Getting your Oregon Driver License

  • A Provisional Instruction permit allow you to operate vehicle only if you are accompanied by a person who:
    • Has a valid driver’s license.
    • Is at least 21 years old; and
    • Is sitting beside you.
  • You will get an interim card showing your driving privileges while waiting for your instruction permit/driver’s license.
  • Photo Rules. These items are not allowed in a photo:
    • Eyeglasses
    • Sunglasses
    • Hat or head covering (other than religious)
    • Contacts that change the appearance of the eye.
    • Face paint
    • Sticker or badges
    • Or anything that covers your face or changes your appearance.
  • You must turn in any driver license or ID card you have from Oregon.
