So you need a driver’s license in Michigan?


What You’ll Need

  • Proof of identity, Social Security number, legal presence in U.S., and residency in Michigan
  • Temporary Instruction Permit
  • Road skills test certificate
  • $25 for Temporary Instruction Permit fee


What You’ll Do

  • Step 1: Read the Michigan Driver Manual and take online practice exams to prepare for the written test
  • Step 2: Visit your nearest SOS office to apply for your Temporary Instruction Permit
    • Submit the required documents & ID
    • Pass the written test
    • Pass the road signs test
    • Pass the vision test
    • Submit payment
    • Receive your Temporary Instruction Permit
  • Step 3: Practice driving under the supervision of a licensed adult driver for at least 30 days
  • Step 4: Schedule your road skills test with a third-party testing provider
  • Step 5: Visit the testing provider’s location on the day of the test
    • Pass the road skills test
    • Submit payment
    • Obtain a certificate
  • Step 6: Visit your nearest SOS office to apply for your Class O driver’s license
    • Submit the required documents & ID
    • Receive a temporary driver’s license
  • Step 7: Receive your Class O driver’s license via U.S. mail within 3 weeks


Caveats and Exceptions

  • Under age 18?  Then you need to complete the Graduated Driver’s License program in order to earn your Class O driver’s license.
  • Failed the road test? Then you will need to wait at least 1 day before you can retake it.
