Here's the ultimate guide to renewing your driver license in Massachusetts. We've simplified the entire process for you so you can save time.

 

What You’ll Need

To renew your driver’s license online...

  • ID photo (if current photo is more than 9 years old or taken before your 21st birthday)
  • Driver’s license number
  • $50 for Class D driver’s license renewal fee

To renew your driver’s license in person...

  • Completed Driver’s License, Learner’s Permit or ID Card Application (Form LIC100)
  • Proof of your U.S. citizenship or lawful presence/date of birth:
    • Certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate;
    • U.S. passport or passport card; OR
    • Certificate of Citizenship (Form N-560 or N-561)
  • Proof of your MA residency:
    • Any RMV-issued document;
    • Mortgage or lease document dated within 60 days;
    • Federal-, state-, or municipal-issued documents such as first-class mail; OR
    • Utility bill, credit card statement, or medical statement dated within 60 days
  • Proof of your Social Security number:
    • Social Security card; OR
    • W-2 form
  • $50 for Class D driver’s license renewal fee

What You’ll Do

To renew your driver’s license online...

  • Step 1: Visit the Massachusetts RMV Online Services website
    • Choose to renew your Class D license
    • Provide your full name, driver’s license number, Social Security number, and email address
    • Submit $50 payment
  • Step 2: Receive your renewed Class D driver’s license via U.S. mail within 7 days

To renew your driver’s license in person…

  • Step 1: Visit your nearest RMV office (optional: make an appointment!)
    • Present the required documents and ID
    • Pass a vision test
    • Have your ID photo taken
    • Submit $50 payment
  • Step 2: Receive your renewed Class D driver’s license via U.S. mail within 7 days

 

Caveats and Exceptions

  • You cannot renew your driver’s license online if you…
    • Completed your previous driver’s license renewal online
    • Have renewed your driver’s license online any time within the past 10 years
    • Do not have a Social Security number
    • Need to change your name
    • Are over age 75
    • Are requesting your first REAL ID driver’s license
    • Have a REAL ID driver’s license marked “limited term”
  • Do you have unpaid parking tickets, E-Z Pass violations, excise taxes, RMV fees, or child support payments?  You will need to pay these first before you can renew your driver’s license.
  • Has your driver’s license been lost, damaged, or stolen?  You can still renew it online (provided you know your driver’s license number) or in person at the RMV.
  • Has your driver’s license been expired for more than one year?  Then you will need to apply for a new driver’s license.
