Ultimate Guide to getting your Driver License in Arkansas

Here's the ultimate guide to getting your driver license at the Arkansas DMV. We've simplified the entire process for you so you can save time.

What You’ll Need to Get your Arkansas DMV Driver License

  • Proof of Identity
    • Current DL/ID. 
    • Photo work/school ID 
    • Concealed Handgun License
    • Pilot’s license. 
    • Vehicle Registration/Title. 
    • Sealed Court order (must have a seal). 
    • Medicare/Medicaid are accepted & AR Kids cards up to age 19
    • Parent Affidavit (Parent/guardian must appear in person, prove his/her identity regarding the minor child’s identity).
  • Proof of Legal Presence
    • U.S. Passport/U.S. Passport card. 
    • U.S. Birth Certificate/Birth Abroad (U.S. only) Originals or certified copy
    • U.S. Visa with valid foreign passport-appropriate 
    • INS document is also required- must be verified through S.A.V.E • Employment Authorization Card- must be verified through S.A.V.E. 
    • Immigration & Naturalization Service documents listed Must be verified through S.A.V.E.) 
      • Certificate of Naturalization (N-550, N-570 or N-578)
      • Certificate of Citizenship (N-560, N-561 or N-645) 
        • Resident Alien card/Permanent Resident Card (I-151, I-551, AR-3, AR-3A or AR-103)
  • Social Security Number
    • Social Security Card DL/ID) 
    • W-2 form 
    • • Form 1099
  • Show proof of legal residency (U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport).
    • If you’re applying for an Enhanced Security Driver’s License, you must show 2 documents proving your residency. These proofs must be original, show your name, and show your physical addresses (no P.O. Box). Examples include utility bills, pay stubs, and personal property tax receipts.
  • Provide verifiable proof of your Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card) OR sign an affidavit stating you aren't eligible for an SSN.
  • Provide proof of identity,* which can be EITHER:
    • 2 documents from the primary list.
      • Primary list documents must include your full name and birth date (e.g., original or certified birth certificate, military ID, or INS documents).
    • OR
    • 1 document from the primary list and 1 document from the secondary list (vehicle registration, health insurance card, employment ID, etc.).

What You’ll Do to Get your Arkansas Driver License

  • Step 1: Pay the $5 testing fee.
  • Step 2: Pass the following.
    • Written Permit Test
    • Vision Test
    • To help you pass the written test you can study the state's driver handbook. If you want to ensure passing the exam on your first try, we suggest taking an online practice test beforehand.

Caveats and Exceptions to Getting your Arkansas Driver License

  • Every applicant, regardless of age, must hold a learner's permit before getting a driver's license in Arkansas. The only exception is for new residents with a valid out-of-state license (see above).
  • Once you pass your vision and written tests, you'll receive a learner's permit.
  • If your proof of ID shows a different name (e.g., if your name has changed due to marriage, divorce, or court order), you must provide proof of the legal name change, such as a marriage license or divorce decree.
