How Self-Care Can Create a Miracle at the DMV

How Self-Care Can Create a Miracle at the DMV

We recently came across an uplifting and inspirational story from the blog Self Care with Gracy and decided that it was too important not to share. Why? Everyone who's been to the DMV can in some way relate to this post. One of the powers of the DMV, for better or worse, is that it's memorable. You probably can recount one or more of your visits as well as the emotions you felt during it (frustration, anger, relief, happiness). Gracy's story cuts across the emotions of a DMV visit, suggests what about the DMV has helped it maintain its bad reputation, and how you can reframe that perception. Hint: It has to do with human interaction and it's worth reading to the end!   How Self-Care Can Create a Miracle at the DMV Published July 12 by Self Care with Gracy The Visit Last Thursday, I went to the DMV to get my updated driver’s license and registration.  Getting this done had been on my to-do list for more than...

New York, at 59% makes sense (New York City has low car ownership) but Texas, you surprised us. Massachusetts was higher than expected too. With a good proportion of the state's population in Boston and accessible to good transit alternatives, we expected Massachusetts to...

Is Street Cleaning About Raking Leaves or Raking in the Dough?

Is Street Cleaning About Raking Leaves or Raking in the Dough?

Is street cleaning more effective at cleaning the street or making money for cities? And how much do urban drivers on average pay per year in street cleaning tickets? Our YoGov Wizards team did a bit of digging to help answer these questions, and we were surprised! Raking Leaves or Raking in the Dough? The above question was posed by Dan in this WBEZ article looking at street sweeping costs and revenue in Chicago. In that in-depth article, it found that street cleaning especially served a purpose in colder climates were there is a great risk for freezing and potholes developing due to debris blockage.  This is true. Debris does accumulate on city streets making street cleaning an important public service. But important enough to justify the high street cleaning ticket prices? The fact is this: Parking and street cleaning tickets is a revenue generator for cities. In 2013, Chicago took in $15 million from parking ticket revenue. Street cleaning itself cost the city...

Wait Times at the DMV Explained: Why it Feels Like Torture

Wait Times at the DMV Explained: Why it Feels Like Torture

In 2012, the NYTimes published a story titled "Why Waiting is Torture". We have taken a look at the science behind waiting and expectations based on this NYTimes article, why the DMV feels like one of the worst culprits, and how you can avoid this torture completely. "Why Waiting is Torture" According to Alex Stone, who wrote this NYTimes Opinion piece in 2012, "the experience of waiting, whether for luggage or groceries, is defined only partly by the objective length of the wait". His example was this: Some years ago, Houston airport executives were receiving a large amount of complaints about waiting at baggage claim. When the Executives analyzed the data, they found that on average, passengers spent 1 minute getting from their arrival gate to baggage claim. At baggage claim, the spent an average of 7 minutes waiting for their bags. The solution: The airport moved the arrival gates further away from baggage claim. Instead of waiting at baggage claim, passengers spent that idle time...
